The 2013 BA Stage 2 Breakout Breakout
One of the market’s textbook Stage 2 Breakout setups. Below is the real chart — the base, the pivot (buy point), and the move that followed. The question every trader asks looking back: could you have called the entry in real time?
What is a Stage 2 Breakout?
A Stage 2 Breakout (Stan Weinstein) — the stock emerges from a long base into a sustained advance, reclaiming its rising long-term moving averages on volume.
The pivot is everything
The pivot point — Jesse Livermore’s term for the exact moment a move begins — is where the stage 2 breakout resolves and the buyers take control. Enter too early and you get shaken out in the base; chase too late and your risk/reward is gone. Nailing that pivot, on volume, is the single hardest skill in swing trading — and the only way to get good at it is reps.
Could you have called it?
